Former DLA Piper UK Head of Litigation and Regulatory joins Provenio Litigation

Posted on December 21st, 2020

Provenio Litigation LLP has appointed David Gray as a consultant to the firm’s Investment Committee.

David enjoyed a long and successful career at DLA Piper before retiring from the partnership in 2017. He was a partner for over 25 years, Head of the UK Litigation and Regulatory Group for 16 years and Manchester Office Managing Partner for 4 years.

David has managed many large multi-disciplinary teams in high-value, complex claims, often of a multi-party/jurisdictional nature, acting for a wide variety of corporate clients. As a consultant, David will act as a member of the firm’s internal Investment Committee, assessing the suitability of cases for Provenio’s £50 million litigation fund with Therium.

Managing Partner at Provenio Litigation, Mark Goodwin, was Head of Litigation and Regulatory at DLA Piper’s Liverpool office for 17 years before founding the business last year.

Commenting on David Gray’s appointment he said:

“David is an outstanding lawyer who brings wide-ranging legal expertise, sound judgement derived from his vast experience working at the highest level in the UK legal services market and commercial acumen to our Investment Committee.

“We are excited to provide such a valuable litigation funding service to our clients – and we are equally excited to be working with David again.”

Commenting on his new role at Provenio, David Gray said:

“I worked with Mark for many years at DLA Piper and was always impressed by his entrepreneurial spirit. It came as no surprise when Mark told me about his exciting new venture and we remained in close contact during the formation and launch of Provenio. For many years, one of my roles was to adjudicate on and monitor all litigation cases where alternative funding methods were being proposed. I worked with Mark frequently in this capacity and it therefore feels like a natural fit for me to support them again at Provenio as a consultant on the firm’s Investment Committee. I look forward to resuming some creative and constructive debates as a part of the internal approval process before seeking Therium’s involvement.”

Provenio Litigation was launched last year by a team of senior litigation lawyers from DLA Piper’s Liverpool office in order to advise exclusively on high value, national and international commercial disputes. The team has over 100 years’ combined litigation experience at DLA Piper.

£50m litigation fund to finance high value commercial claims

Posted on October 28th, 2020

Provenio Litigation LLP has announced the launch of a £50 million fund in partnership with leading global litigation funder Therium, to finance high value business litigation and arbitration claims.

Provenio was launched last year by a team of senior litigation lawyers from DLA Piper in order to advise exclusively on high-value, national and international commercial disputes.

With the anticipated global economic crisis following the Covid-19 pandemic, corporates and investors will have claims arising from failed investments, disputes in respect of long term, high value contracts which are no longer economically viable and claims against counter parties, financial institutions, insurers and others (including professional advisers).   Lawyers widely anticipate an increase in such claims as the economic consequences of the pandemic emerge.

At a time when there will be huge pressure on clients to minimise the burden of carrying legal spend, this product enables Provenio’s clients to avoid the significant cost of litigation and arbitration proceedings while taking action to recover substantial sums and damages acting in the best interest of stakeholders.

Managing Partner at Provenio, Mark Goodwin, was head of the litigation and the regulatory at DLA Piper’s Liverpool office before founding the new business last year.  He commented:

“The portfolio litigation funding agreement with Therium takes our business to a new level. We can offer clients a fully contingent fee arrangement backed by funding that takes the cash flow burden and financial risk out of the case but maintains a significant return for the client on a successful outcome. We believe this is a compelling offering to corporate clients and investors faced with the challenge of having to take legal proceedings to recover compensation and entitlements in high value and complex claims. We are excited to provide such a valuable service to our clients, particularly at a time of need in a challenging economic climate post Covid-19.”

Added Mark:

“Operating as an independent specialist commercial litigation law firm, we are free to advise clients in respect of substantial claims against large national and international institutions including banks, central government and FTSE 100 corporates. Our structure and focus mean that we don’t have to turn away business because of conflicts which is increasingly a problem at larger full-service law firms.”

Neil Purslow, Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Therium said: “We have enjoyed a successful relationship with the Provenio team for many years and, since its launch last year, Provenio has distinguished itself in the competitive litigation market.  We are excited to develop that relationship by making this investment to finance suitable claims under the stewardship of this excellent team.”

Provenio increases its resources through partnership with on demand lawyer platform

Provenio Litigation LLP has increased its resources by entering into a “lawyer on demand” agreement with online legal platform F-LEX.

F-LEX will provide Provenio with paralegals to work on the document management aspects of the firm’s high value, complex business litigation cases.

Mark Goodwin, Managing Partner at Provenio commented:

“We are delighted to have agreed terms with F-LEX to support our document management requirements on high value, complex cases.

“Clients quite rightly are demanding an efficient and cost-effective approach to document management on cases while maintaining the quality and integrity of the disclosure process. Having worked with a number of suppliers over the last few years, we are confident F-LEX are ‘best in class’ and complement our high-quality business litigation services.”

Said Louise Anderson, Head of the Northern Hub at F-LEX:

“We are very excited to have agreed terms with Provenio. The F-LEX Legal platform will support Provenio’s success by connecting the firm with the best litigation paralegals and lawyers whilst ensuring efficiency for clients through our flexible, on demand model.”
